Support for L & D Specialists in making their activities accessible and inclusive

As equal opportunities employers it is important that learning and development is made accessible to everyone. And this is Crystal Learning’s theme for 2008. On this occasion however, this short piece is about making learning and development accessible and inclusive for those with a disability. This can be anything from dyslexia to a physical disability, from a medical condition to visual impairment.

As learning and development professionals we are unlikely to be experts in disability, particularly when the topic is so wide reaching. Therefore, we need help and support to make sure that the activities we provide can be truly accessible and inclusive to everyone.

The Strategy for Creating Inclusive Programmes
of Study (or SCRIPS) is consequently a very useful resource for those of us with accessibility in mind. Their website http://www.scips.worc.ac.uk/ can be a valuable source of information if you have a particular delegate that you want to support or if you want a general understanding for future reference.

It provides some fairly basic etiquette advice about working with those with a disability which though ‘common sense’ is good to bring back in to focus. Alongside this are some suggested strategies for making learning and development activities accessible and inclusive to those with a disability.

Those of you out there who are already competent and practised in providing inclusive learning and development activities it would be good to hear your thoughts about the site. And if you have any particular words of wisdom for other trainers that are less experienced, please share!
